  1. Remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking.
  2. Season both sides of the steaks generously with salt and black pepper.
  3. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the steaks and sear for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare.
  4. Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest on a plate, covered with foil.
  5. In the same skillet, add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Pour in the red wine and beef broth, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom. Let it simmer until reduced by half.
  6. Stir in butter and thyme, then season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. While the sauce simmers, toss the asparagus with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Roast in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes until tender.
  8. Serve the steaks topped with the red wine sauce alongside the roasted asparagus and mashed potatoes.
