Ingredients
- 2 cups elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional for breadcrumbs)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, then whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until bubbly and golden.
- Gradually add the milk to the roux, whisking continuously to prevent lumps, and cook until the mixture thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, then remove the saucepan from heat and add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.
- Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, mixing well until every piece is coated in the creamy goodness.
- If desired, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and transfer the mac and cheese to a greased baking dish. In a separate bowl, mix breadcrumbs with olive oil, then sprinkle over the top for a crispy finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly, then remove and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm and enjoy your delicious easy mac and cheese!
